Mosquito & Bug Repellents

Citronella, lemon eucalyptus oil and smarter habits outdoors.

The most effective “natural” mosquito strategy is still boring and brilliant: remove standing water, then use a repellent with an EPA-reviewed active ingredient when you are outdoors.

Dump the breeding sites

  • Empty saucers, buckets, toys, tarps and gutters weekly.
  • Refresh birdbaths often; add mosquito dunks labeled for that use if you keep water features.
  • Screen rain barrels and fix drainage that puddles.

Repellents that actually work

Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE / PMD) and IR3535 appear on EPA’s list of active ingredients used in registered skin-applied repellents. Citronella candles and coils can help in still air at close range but are not a substitute for skin repellent when bites are heavy.

  • Choose a product labeled for mosquitoes and follow the age, reapply and fabric instructions.
  • EPA’s repellent search tool helps match products to how long you need protection.
  • For babies and pregnancy, follow CDC and product-label guidance — do not improvise essential-oil blends for infants.

Yard habits that help

  • Wear light, loose long sleeves at dusk.
  • Run a fan on the patio — mosquitoes are weak fliers.
  • Keep grass trimmed; thin dense weeds near seating areas.
Safety Never put undiluted essential oils on skin, and never spray oil mixes near flames. Keep repellent out of eyes and mouths. Do not use OLE on children under 3 years. Pets metabolize oils differently — do not assume a human product is safe for dogs or cats.
